About Me

I’m Eric Avalos — building toward Security Engineering through hands-on systems work.

My focus is developing a strong foundation in the systems security is built on: networking, Linux,
core security concepts, and cloud infrastructure. The goal is to understand how systems actually behave —
how traffic flows, how access is controlled, and where failures occur.

I prioritize depth over speed, building practical skill through direct interaction with real systems
rather than surface-level study.

How I Build

Hands-On Execution: Concepts are reinforced through labs and real configurations.
I focus on building, testing, and understanding system behavior.

Proof of Work: This site and my LinkedIn document that process. Labs, projects,
and configurations are recorded to show practical ability and understanding.

Structured Progression: My current focus moves through networking, Linux, security,
and cloud — building a layered understanding of how modern systems are designed and secured.

What I’m Building Right Now

  • Networking: segmentation, routing, traffic flow, and access control
  • Linux: system management, permissions, SSH, and OS fundamentals
  • Security: core principles, defensive thinking, and system hardening
  • Cloud: infrastructure fundamentals and deployment environments

These areas form the foundation of security engineering, and I’m developing them through hands-on labs
and documented work.

Focus Areas

My long-term focus is on the control points that define system security:

  • Identity & Access (IAM): controlling access and permissions
  • Key Management / PKI: securing credentials and secrets
  • Network Segmentation / Zero Trust: limiting lateral movement
  • Logging & Monitoring: visibility into system activity
  • Incident Response: detection and recovery from failures

Direction

Long term, I’m working toward security engineering and architecture — building systems where access,
visibility, and resilience are designed into the foundation.
